The focus at Kueffner Holsteins is 100% on cattle care. Our goal is to develop cattle to show at a national level. Successful showing leads to marketing cattle and their offspring nationally. We also use intensive embryo transplant programs to harvest embryos for international markets.

Kueffner Holsteins and Jerseys is managing Arethusa Farm in Litchfield, CT. Currently all of our milking cattle are housed here and we are spending 85% of our time here. We have a beautiful facility with 20 tie stalls and a large box stall barn pictured above for our top cows.

Kueffner Holsteins still operates a 48 acre farm outside Boonsboro, Maryland, housing just heifers and on a limited basis. The heifers have access to several large pastures, primarily for exercise. Some hay is made on the farm, but all other feed is purchased.

The labor force at Kueffner Holsteins is also limited. Ernie Kueffner and Terri Packard split the cattle care and marketing responsiblities. Ernie focuses on feeding, milking, and caring for the cows. Terri is involved in raising the calves and heifers and working with the cows. When Ernie travels with the showstring or to look at cattle, he feels it is essential to have someone at the farm who is familiar with the cattle so Terri fills that role. Initial marketing contacts are handled by Ernie with Terri doing follow up correspondence and the required paperwork. Terri also plays a large role in advertising.

Over the years, cattle exhibited by Ernie Kueffner have garnered numerous awards in the show ring. However, three accomplishments stand above the rest.

    1. Ernie is the only exhibitor ever to receive Supreme Champion honors with two different breeds of cattle at World Dairy Expo (1996 Jersey and 2001 Holstein).
    2. He is also the only person to exhibit the champion cow in three different breeds at the Royal Winter Fair (1997 Jersey, 1999 Brown Swiss, and 2001 Holstein).
    3. In the 79 Year history of the Royal Winter Fair, no other US exhibitor has ever shown both the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Holstein (2001).

These three accomplishments are the highlight of Ernie's involvement with showing dairy cattle

The farm is located in a very historic area of Western Maryland. The house and barn were built in the 1830's prior to the Civil War. We are only 6 miles from Antietam National Battlefield, the site of the deadliest battle of the Civil War. It is said that our house was one of several in the area used as a Civil War hospital. Boonsboro is a 20-minute drive from the junction of Interstates 70 and 81 and one hour from Baltimore and Washington D.C.
